When you enjoy customizing cars your Hot Wheels, shopping changes a bit because now are you not only looking for cars you don’t have in your collection, but you’re eyeballing cars for parts that you can use in other custom creations. Whether it be tires, a spoiler, or some chrome, keeping an eye out for parts now is easy and cheap when compared to trying to find them later.

I’m a fan off the exposed engine on the hood look so I’m always looking for motors and engines that can be removed and added to my custom cars. Unfortunately, most of the engines on Hot Wheels are just plastic that has been chromed. These typically don’t do well when you try to free them from the cars and they do even worse when you try to whittle them down to find your custom. You can try it but prepare for a battle.

Fortunately, the ‘32 Ford Vicky has a metal engine that is perfect for use in custom cars. Not only is the motor metal, but it is actually the front post of the car. So after you drill out the rivet you’re done! The motor will come right out and you’re all set. Just grind down and file the post itself and you have one nice engine for that next custom hood. Paying a $1 for a car with a part you want is much cheaper than finding the part alone elsewhere…plus you get other parts out of the deal, like wheels!

Of course, if you’re looking some particular motor/engine or part, there’s always RedlineShop.com which sells reproduction parts. Their prices are a little on the expensive side, but I’m also not looking for vintage parts, I’m just looking for something to spice up my custom. But that’s not to say some of the vintage motors aren’t bad ass looking!

I’ll try to post when I spy cars that look like they have something special to offer the weekend customizer. Don’t expect posts about wheels, though. Everyone has their favorite and it’s really easy to find what you’re looking for.

Here are a few of my weekend customs with the ‘32 Ford Vicky engine attached for good measure.
