I’m guessing most of us aren’t professional diecast customizers. Weekend customizers like myself are limited to what space we can muster in our house. Whether it be in the basement, garage, or elsewhere, we have to make do with what space we have. Here’s a quick look at my Redline Derby work shop.
It’s nothing fancy. I have an old drafting table out in our patio room, where I also have the derby track setup on a almost-permanent basis. It’s handy to have the track near the bench so I can test changes to cars quickly. Thankfully, Hot Wheels are small so you don’t need a ton of room for the cars…too bad the tools and accessories are another story.
Tools, paint, books, and other a necessities have been relegated to cheap tupperware drawers. I went to Home Depot and got a few bins for parts organization. And if you’re wondering, yes, that’s an aquarium. We weren’t using it and it made a great little shelf-and-nook. Honestly, I think the fact that it’s glass makes it feel like it is taking up less room. The shelf lets me keep parts on top while having quick access to current cars and in-use tools without messing up the workspace.
Like I said, it’s nothing fancy and far from the work shop I would like to have, but good enough to keep me out of the way of others on the weekends. Our patio room provides a good amount of natural light and also gives me quick access to the outside when I need to paint. However, with the cold weather coming in quickly, I need to find an alternative painting zone – perhaps my backyard shed.
Do you have a little space setup for your customizing and hot rodding? Snap some shots and share them over in the Redline Forum.
