There is a difference between “modding” and “customizing” diecast cars. Customizing is changing car’s appearance. Modding is altering a car so it performs better on the track. Either one can be as simple or easy as you want to make, there is a difference, but you can combine the two.

Custom decals and my first logo car
While I love racing Hot Wheels, the one thing that got be sucked in to begin with is customizing. And not even customizing for racing (modding), just stripping and painting a car was a pretty fun weekend project in my book. But that simple adventure didn’t last long, soon I wanted more.

Are the Faster Than Ever (FTE) mainline Hot Wheels faster than non-FTE? Yes and no. At a technical level they are. The FTE cars have nickel-plated axles which do make the wheels spin a little faster and a lot smoother. But just because car is better equipped doesn’t make it better on the track.
