Discussion

I picked up the blueray this weekend.  I had not seen in the theater.  It was good...probably better if I ever get around to adding the subwoofer to my home theater.  Action all day long, a bit light on the story, it's still there, more in retrospect than you notice watching it.  One thing about the series people don't generally notice is how progressive/transgressive/different the narratives and themes are.  Beyond Thunderdome, the most thematically rich IMHO, contains a full on Marxist deconstruction of capitalism...which isn't to say it's a Marxist film, just that the structure of Batertown's economy follows Marx's analysis of capitalism.

This time, the ostensible "hero", is chained up half the time, and is along for the ride, rather than controlling the narrative (Max's lack of ability to control the story figures into most of the movies).  His most heroic act you don't even see.  The movie does set it up that he is the character that you, the viewer, is to identify with but unlike a normal movie, there is no illusion of control, your encouraged vantage is that of struggling spectator rather than that of active protagonist.  The female character, usually along for the ride, this time is literally driving the narrative and the truck.

What the movie doesn't do is simply replace the standard male protagonist with a female one (think Tomb Raider...though even that has some issues with allowing for the female character to totally drive the story).  Furyosa's character pretty much drives the story, but is presented as "other" as is normal for female characters...generally they are there to be acted upon or to act upon the male protagonist who you are encouraged to identify with. And by encouraged to identify with I mean the person in whose position the shots and framing an story place you in.  Every movie puts the spectator, you, somewhere.  You aren't supposed to notice it, and lots of "bad" movies are simply films that are poorly edited and shot so that they fail to "properly" locate you in the film.  Film Studies people love those movies.  So this movie is "strange" in that it has the "other" drive the story...on purpose.  It's an art film masquerading as an action film.

Anyway, watch a standard action movie and pay attention to the framing of the story.  I haven't see it in awhile, and barely remember it, but the first Bourne movie is probably a good one because even though he has no idea who he is or what's going on (like a viewer at the outset of any movie) he still manages to drive the narrative even though the story says that he isn't in control.  If you pay attention you'll notice that even though he isn't necessarily in control of events, he is in control of the movie...which is literally about him regaining control of events.  Then watch this one again and you'll notice how different it is. And if you didn't like it, this whole off the cuff half assed analysis might help explain why, because your positioning was made to be uncomfortable.

^^^^^^  Should explain everything.  ^^^^^^^

In order for the film to actually be different  from every other smash em up, post end of the world film.

I think they succeeded!!

Yep.

Still the BEST movie I've ever seen.

But yeah.... Not having the benefit of surround sound at home versus the

BOOOOOOOOOOOMING sound in the theater...

Big bummer.

It SHOULD win so many awards. ALL the awards possible. ( except Max. His acting never did hold my attention. But then... Like it was stated... Max was just trying to catch up and stay alive. He had no control at all over his for the most part.

I just discovered this searching for that Q&A link.

NOW this is interesting news.

This is another, if not the main reason I loved this film.

And you don't even realize how easy it is to follow from scene to scene until it is pointed out to you what they did.

Buuuuuuut....  Watch the action scenes again... Pick a corner of the screen, not the center focal point,  and watch ONLY that spot...  You will see an entirely new perspective on what ELSE is happening at the same time BEHIND them. AWESOME STUFF!!   EVERYONE is in the same scene doing SOMETHING .

ALL AT ONCE!!!

FANTASTIC STUFF!!

I thought the fact that Max was really a supporting character was great and helped further hit home that he is a drifter and survivor. It's not about where or what he's doing, he's just going along like the rest of them - but gets mixed up in something and does what he needs. (Or at least, that's what I felt)

If that doesn't setup a good (yet generic) formula for future Mad Max movies, then I don't know what is. Now, you could essentially turn this into a Bond-like string of movies every few years...and even have different actors playing Max. So long as there are cars, explosions, action and a strong character for Max to latch onto, you're set. Each one would get progressively worse until there is another reboot, but hey, I'll take it.

As a kid, Thunderdome was my favorite but as I've grown, the original Mad Max earns my top spot. I accept that Road Warrior was more popular and more or less defined the style/genre, but I think the pre-apocalyptic-ness of the original is awesome. It doesn't hurt that the low production really adds to the grittiness. It's not a deep movie or anything and otherwise low on out right action but I can watch it any day.

Me likey when it go BOOM!!  ( lol)
