Rubber Wheels

iowastockcars Saturday, 1/28/2012

I have proposed, and its been selected, to have a variety class this year in our racing league where each month the cars eligible will be different. One is rubbered wheel cars. I dont have much experience with these. What are some of the fast ones out there?

When I've run some, none of them made it to the end of my 25' track.
They either stopped or fell off.

maybe some work better than others but that is my limited experience.

Rubber wheels almost always rub on the wheel well of the car. They wont make it down a track unless you push them very hard. I've never tested any open wheel ones, dunno how they'd perform.

I have a pair of 'Wedge Dragsters' w/RR from the Dragstrip Demons series...they roll pretty well until the rubber tires contact the sides of the track, then they slow down significantly. I was thinking of attempting to paint the tire sidewalls w/clear nail polish to give them a harder surface, but haven't tried it yet.

On another note, I just got a Ford GTX1(w/RR) from the Boulevard series. The car is heavy and the wheels spin very smoothly and don't contact the fenders at all. I think it might be a better canidate for the 'clear nail polish' idea.

The tires with the hardest compound will win. Traction is the LAST thing you want in gravity racing. I've used rubber-tired cars at the front of the pack in my videos to slow it down. They wouldn't even make it to the bottom without plastic-wheeled cars pushing them.

The RI. johnnies [ JEREMY ] have a "real wheel" race, while the RI. hot wheels club [ JIM ] has a "real rider" race each month... they'll give you the lowdown....
I.M.O. - J.L.'s - '31 Caddy Cabriolet has very skinny tires all around, long wheel base and is heavy...plus the axles fall out when dissassembled, for easy re-use...

I have proposed, and its been selected, to have a variety class...

You you should have done a little testing before proposing that idea.

May e the variety race can be based on style of car, truck, weight, FTE, etc.

I know for a fact they are much slower but I don't see 100% failure on the few rubber wheeled cars that I have. Bought just one single one at Lightning Fest and tried it on Jason's track and it worked well, but I need to expand my garage to get some new quality racers here. I figured I would be going the JL route.

This is just one single month. Also doing Matchbox cars, creature cars, NASCAR cars, Unopened Cars, and Outlaw Cars (Banned FTE 2005-2006, Banned Target Ace Races, and Customized Cars). The other classes have yet to be determined at this point.
