I have 10 or so JLs and 1 is as fast as my import, and 1 is just OK. Out of 100s of HWs, most can beat my OK JL. Now who's got brand consistency!
Think of the proportions! I used to have the same problem, before I was brought around. JLs were expensive, JLs were slow. I probably pawed through dozens of BWF Camaros at KB Toys, looking for just the right plastic-based Hot Wheels. I'll admit that the new Forever 64s and 2.0s are unquestionably slow when compared to other cars. But I'll also admit that an Orange Firebird Funny Car is tenth fastest in our house to nine JLs: Three BWF Camaros, one Chevy Spectacular Spidervan, Proffessor Plum from the Middleweights (though I sense he's going downhill--in a bad way), one Green Silverado, two Dodge Amazing Spiderven, and a Spiderman Camaro. If I remember correctly, behind it are half a dozen more JLs, including the Orange Thing and the Clue Escalade. Do you have any of those?
All I have is the Playing Mantis line of JL's also and they are.... very very slow. The new JL's are pretty bad too from what I hear. I don't really know which years of JL's are the best and which aren't. All I know is that all Hotwheels are fast. Doesn't matter what year (though some years are better then others).
How did the Orange Thing vs. Havoline NASCAR matchup go?...not that Havoline's slow. However, plenty of Hot Wheels from the past couple years are slow, when they started giving them really cheap wheels and axles. Not that JL's been doing any better. They're all getting cheaper.
What I was referring to earlier, 'consistency,' was a particular car. The Side Kick lost to a Van that's slower than the Camaro that it beat. There probably are more fast Hot Wheels than Johnny Lightnings...but a fast JL usually beats a fast HW. Usually. I'll report again on that tomorrow, when that same Camaro--along with the Green Silverado and Spectacular Spidervan--will be racing in the HW Club's Any Brand Race. Last time I was there, a Matchbox won it.

If I remember correctly, the Orange Willies won by 3/4 to 1 car length on both lanes.
