How about vintage Aurora diecast? I remember them as a kid...poorly designed 'scale models' in shiny, pastel-like colors, skinny inboard-mounted wheels, not very fast compared to HWs IIRC. Aurora even made track sets, although their 'gauge' was a bit narrower than Mattel's.
