Nascar build-up...Smokey's Chevelle
This is awesome - best step-by-step guide we've got around here, with great photos! Thanks for the effort in putting this together.
The next thing to do will be to glue in the axles and set the end play on your wheels. But, to do that, you need to grind away the center of the JB Weld in the middle of the axle...
And you'll also have to grind away half the copper axles tube. As you grind the copper, since it is so soft, it will kinda flatten out and fill the center. You'll have to take a sharp tool and clear away the thin copper in the center...
The axle tube should look like this... the front axle tube...
The rear...
- Interesting method grinding down the tubing. Definitely lets you better "glue" the axles. — redlinederby
- Wonder if you could pre-grind the axle...? Hmmmm — redlinederby
- Warning: copper gets HOT and 1/16" tubing is hard to put in a vice :) — 72_Chevy_C10
This is a little hard to see, but you should see the ends of the axles in the 'trough' of the tube...
And, once you are at this point, it's just a matter of JB Welding the ends of the axles in place...which I will do tonight.
Now, I expect you would like to see how I finished my axles and wheels...but I think a racer needs to have a few secrets :) So, I am going to leave that out of this build...we all have our own techniques for sanding the wheels and polishing the axles. But, I will say that it is much easier with the axles cut and the wheels off the axles, for me.
And fyi, the Chevelle's 'stable-mate' is a Monte Carlo Stocker that I have been doing similar mods to. But, we'll have to see if I can get any speed out of it...
I just remembered that there is JB Weld here at work! So, I might as well glue the axles and lead in now...
And, that is a jig to try to keep the axles straight that the Chevelle is sitting on
Probably going to strip the paint this weekend and clearance the wheel wells...
We are getting close, Race Fans!
The body glass-beaded and the front wheel wheels clearanced...
I'll do a little more glass bead work to try to get the paint out of the seams and a little file work on the wheel wells...then, it's on to primer and paint!
I forgot to bring the Chevelle home over the weekend, so I couldn't do anything to it yesterday.
But, I'll bring it home tonight and shoot the base black on the body (but I'll probably run it down the track a time or two to see how it's running before I paint it!)
- Time to see if all the prep turns into speed...Paging the Javelin to the staging lanes... — Traction-Event
- The Javelin is never far from the staging lanes...though, it beat the other day...I wonder what might have done that? :) — 72_Chevy_C10
With the body removed...
