My arctic dazzle camo'd Later Crater is ready to roll at Portillo Entertainment Racing 's Later Craters vs Dune Crushers Event! Nitro is getting in some test runs on Diamonback Wash.
Presenting the Billy's Midway Racing Podium Crasher! Paint, decals, wheel swap & slightly sprung suspension to help with landing the jump. For anyone who wants to try it, I used a small cotter pin and a small spring; drilling a small hole in the chassis to hold the cotter pin straight and removed the little bump that makes the axle flop side to side when the wheels are off the track. The springs help absorb the impact of landing the jump without affecting the ability to roll. The axles can still rock freely which means it'll still turn when it leans like a stock Monster Truck. Adding a small washer to the axles can limit the wheels turning but may also bind if they are too thick. I didn't use the washers for the Monster Truckin' race, just to keep it fair. I tested it against my other Monster Trucks and it's performing about the same but when the others roll over after a jump, this one tends to stay on it's wheels.
The spring came from an assortment that I bought at a local electronics store. I cut one spring in half and it's nearly perfect for both the front and back without being too firm or too loose. The cotter pins were cut to fit the chassis, roughly 1/3rd was removed, just barely poking through the top side. The spring is a small enough diameter to only touch the rounded part of the cotter pin without applying pressure to the axle, letting it roll as well as without the suspension installed.
Thank you. I was trying a few different spring mounts, both the single inboard mount and also two springs per axle outboard of the chassis but I wasn't happy with the added friction on the axles. This was a simple modification that didn't really change the speed but improved the landing after a jump. I had to work fast so I don't miss the entry deadline so that's as far as I'm going with this one.
