Thunder Country Grand Prix

YOU CAN RELAX, EVERYONE GETS IN!
Rules & restrictions
- This is a Grand Touring class race (i.e. GT1, GT2, GT3, GT4, and GTR models). Clarification on what is allowed and what isn't allowed plus a few good examples are shown in Figure 1 below.
- What about a fantasy or concept GT car? Please send me a picture. I will consider it.
- Wheelbase: IMPORTANT! Must be less than 42mm. See Figure 2 below.
- Ground clearance: This course includes a stadium turn (4-lane banked turn in Figure 3). The bottom lane requires a ground clearance as shown in Figure 4 below. PLEASE NOTE: You are allowed to shave off a plastic scoop or grind metal off the body to meet the clearance requirement.
- Eligible race numbers between 0 and 999 (numbers may begin with 0 or contain one letter, i.e. 00, 08, 007, 3B, 6x).
- NO Hand or Pen painting: Hand painted or pen painted cars are strictly prohibited. Decal of your team logo is encouraged. Painting schemes in the spirit of GT racing is encouraged.
- Designs and decals must be family friendly.
- Modified entries only: Using the stock paint job is allowed. Window tinting or window painting is also allowed. I prefer that you paint/tint the inside of the windows rather than the outside.
- Weight limit: 60g (+1g grace)
- Size limit: Must fit on standard orange track. Please note, height limit is only 1.5”, but I don’t think you’ll find a GT class car near that height.
- Wheels and Axles: Black plastic wheels only. FTE/NPA allowed. Smoothing the wheels with light sanding is allowed, but wheel coning and wheel well hogging are not allowed.
- Lubrication: Graphite and silicone (dried) are allowed. Very small amounts of a wet lubricant are allowed but you will be DQ’d if it’s dripping off the axle.
- Limit 1 entry per person. More than one family member may race, but only if they build their own car and have their own race number.

Race format and scoring
TIME TRIALS will determine who qualifies to race. The top 32 qualify for A-CLASS, the next 16 qualify for B-CLASS. All other entries will be mailed back. Sorry. Depending on the number of entries, I may not film or post the Time Trials.
Penalties/DNF
If a car fails to meet any of the restrictions listed above, the car will not qualify to race but will still have an opportunity to post a time if there are no physical limitations.
Cars that fail to run or fit on the track will not race.
If a car arrives broken or breaks during a race, the host will attempt to repair it. No guarantees on Billy’s ability to fix your car.
Prizes
Top three racers from each class will receive a trophy!
All competitors that qualify to race receive a gift car for a future tournament at the Thunder Country Grand Prix. International racers who elected not to pay $10 extra for return shipping still qualify for a trophy (and will get their car back!).
FINAL WORD OF ADVICE
Thunder Country Grand Prix is about speed more than my other tracks. I encourage you to read and practice build techniques that will make you faster. Please read this linked article.
SECRET SAUCE
If I were competing in this tournament today, I probably wouldn’t even qualify. How sad. I must improve to go against builders like R-Lo, Numbskull and BLR. Just sayin’!
Therefore, I strongly recommend you build multiple cars of the same make/model to determine which one is the fastest BEFORE you attach the body and ship it over.

Discussion
I'm in, and I think my brother wants a spot as well!
#24 for me
#99 for him
- Isaiah, before I can give you #99 for your brother, please confirm with him. It's only fair in case another builder wants #99. — GravityThrottleRacing
- Yeah, he's finding a car right now :) — ManiacMotorsports
- Ya, I am normally 99 but since you were here first, I'll go with 55. Good Luck. — SST55
- Sorry about that, I think he forgot that that's your number — ManiacMotorsports
Ok you talked me into it... I'll finally build a car #80
- WOOHOO! — GravityThrottleRacing
- DEAVERS!! Dude, I’ve been racing for more than 2 years and I don’t think we’ve ever raced together. It’ll be good to see you at the track. — Dog_Squab_Racing
- Looking forward to it. Hopefully I can keep up — NDeavers80
You know what I'm sending!! #00
Let's GO!!!
Team - ABC Allred
Driver - Clancy
#21
We'll take a spot! Number 31, please!
Sweet! Can't wait! #12 please
I'm ABCs son.
# 67 for PaPa-E please
- is that because of the meme??? :( — silas_is_not_here
- I recall that Papa-E lives near E-67 highway — GravityThrottleRacing
I want in please. #83
I love me some GT racing - I'm in at #101. Should be a gas gas gas.
- Well, I can say that getting your car to pass that last test of the front gap on the bumper is gonna be a tough one. All four of the initial cars I chose to examine for this all failed that front bumper gap test. Only one of the Ford GT 40s passed the test and it’s a premium. The Mustang GTD fail the test as does the Dodge viper GT six I have. I would suggest you find something on your bench. That is about 2 mm thick and use that as your first quick check on any car you’re thinking about. Good luck out there. — AbbyNormal
- Longstanding rule at GTR: If you need to grind off a plastic scoop or grind back a metal part of the body to pass the clearance test, YOU CAN DO THAT! — GravityThrottleRacing
- Thanks, Mark. I see that now clearly in the instructions that you included. However, on this go round I’m not interested in any grinding, do you have a few cars to have you look at to see what you think and I’ll DM you with that. — AbbyNormal
- Question: The front gap ( since I dont have something to measure that small) is the clearance about the size of a penn laid flat ? Meaning if you can roll your front bumper over a penny and it clear would that be a good reference ? — RoadrageRacing
- Hi RoadrageRacing! I'm afraid I can't say yes or no definitively. However, if you send me your entry and let's say you've shaved off part of the front scoop, but it still rubs. I will gladly remove a bit more to ensure you're good. Hope that helps! — GravityThrottleRacing
- I’ll share this information from my digital calipers in case it is still useful in someway: a penny is 1.5 mm thick, a dime is 1.2 mm thick, and a nickel is 2 mm thick. These are just measurements and probably averages. — AbbyNormal
- Awesome! Thank y ou — RoadrageRacing
I'm in. Number 08
Essex Boys #44 and my sons team Raptor Racing #64 please !
