Most common weight limit

CabbagePatch Friday, 2/6/2026

I enjoy moding cars for speed and looks... what is the most common weight limit for races? I'm sure I'll be building some cars just for the fun of it but figured if I build them with the most common weight then if a race comes up I can just pick from what I have already built

Welcome to Redline Derby! The most common weight limits are between 50-60g, although some races have heavier limits.

Welcome to RedlineDerby newcomer!

  • I'm watching your YouTube...good stuff — CabbagePatch
  • Thanks. If you want send me a private message for my address and send a 60 gram car to test on my track. Include some $ and I'll send it back to you. 60 gram weight is my track record currently held by Blueline Racing at 1.744 seconds. I'd be happy to run your car and do a quick video on YouTube if you want? — Dutch_Clutch_Racing

welcome!

Usually around 60g. I used to think that way too, but when a new race is announced, I get excited to build for that particular race. Most often you're given ample time to complete a build from the time a race is posted anyway.

  • There are certain cars that the only reason I would build would be for specific race...others I'll build multiple of because I like the car...and having some done means I can enter multiple races in the same time frame — CabbagePatch

Between 55g and 70g. I try for 60g on most builds as I find it works best.

Depends on the track...some tracks are lighter weights like BOSS...some prefer the heavier weights like XR...but generally you will see the weight listed at 65g's cuz that's actually the default weight on the form for RLD.

Heere's a thought: you can still build the cars, just do NOT add any weight to it for the time being. Drill it, do your wheel swaps, polish the axles, smooth the tires, then use blue painters tape to tape the car together and set it aside. That way, you already have a car built--you just need to add weights to it for that particular race. I do mine this way on a regular basis, and have a boxful of predrilled cars ready to go.
