I had never encountered Matchbox models before. My wife bought them out of curiosity. As far as I understand, they are produced by the same company, since the wheels are similar. But the difference is in the colors, Matchbox somehow looks better (or so it seemed to me)

A fun fact about that light blue Datsun: If you look to the upper left of the front wheel, you can see a tiny Lamley Group YouTube channel logo.

Get the right shoes on a Matchbox, and you've got a competitive runner in more cases than you may first envision. Corvette C8, Porsche 918, Karma GS-6 to rattle off three examples. That line's better attention to detail lets them win in the case of so many licenced cars right from the blister
For diorama builds, they're a must. Hot Wheels' game in more utilitarian castings cannot keep pace. I often say the worst MBX ambulance is better than the best HW in that regard
MBX didn't always have subpar wheels exactly speaking, but for those models you may have to spend some doubloons online or at the antique shops to obtain such cars from a bygone era

- Ouch, my eyes -- made me think of the recent HW offerings of a vehicle + trailer with horrendous execution of hitches. That poor Volvo 240 wagon's hind end was butchered to make room for attachment. On the other side, MBX could get "optimistic" in placing a hitch on such cars as a VW Golf, LOL. What's that towing capacity? — Chris_Hood

In general, Matchbox are more realistic and closer to scale, while HW's are "1:64-ish", meaning that they are kinda-sorta close to scale, but not really. Booth can be tuned for racing, but HW seems to have better wheels, for the most part--you really have to work ont he Matchbox wheels to get them decent for racing.
