Video cameras used

Hey All,

I am looking for some additional cameras for Chaos Canyon, currently I have 1 Hero 4 black, a handycam, a Canon 60D DSLR and my old iPhone 6. The GoPro is the best for high speed at 120FPS at 1080 but they're about $500NZD each, my iPhone does 240FPS but only at 720.

Obviously GoPro is the normal preferred go to for quality but I've been looking at the Run Cam as it is quite inexpensive ($160NZD) so I could afford to buy 2 or 3 for less than 1 GoPro. You can see the run cam here

Has anyone ever tried using a Run Cam for diecast racing, or what do you use to get that nice smooth action cause small cars moving lightning fast can be hard to capture nicely.

The iPhone works ok but it only does like a minute or two of slow mo before it maxes out and goes back to normal speed so I have to keep stopping and starting which leaves tonnes of separate clips and is painful to manage.

The iphone doesn't change frame rates mid recording. It may go back to normal speed when playing it on your phone, but if you put that clip into a video editor, the whole video will be at 240fps or whatever frame rate you're recording in.

  • Thanks. I have had issues as well with my phone just stopping recording mid race, so overall not my ideal but better than nothing. — Chaos_Canyon

I use only my iPhone as I don't have the budget for more cameras at this point. I've been quite happy with what it puts out. I record the races in real-time and then pull it into iMovie where I add the slow-mo. Yeah, the resolution it puts out isn't GoPro level but it does a good job and shows up well, so worth a try.

  • Thanks. The iPhone has been handy definitely but mine is definitely bugging out at the moment. I had to delete half of my testing footage because it wouldn’t even play on the iPhone which was really disappointing and I don’t want to have that happen for the tournament so I’m just going with the GoPro for the main shots and the iPad Pro for the finish line area in case I need a photo finish — Chaos_Canyon
