I myself have had a musical journey. starting out with classic rock and old country since that is what my parents were into. Then moved into the pop/glam rock of the 80. Which by the end of the 80s and beginning of the 90's i went into a rap phase somehow. I think it was the hammer pants and snoop dogg swagger that got me. But then I was awakend by a CD that I could listen to every song over and over and over. Nirvana's Nevermind. it changed my music tastes forever. So here i went from rap to Alternative Grunge of the 90's. Late 90's and early 00's I turned to hard rock and metal. Then once again I hit a musical crossroad where I took the path of pure metal. was very narrow minded about metal and only seen the main four metal bands(Metallica, Megadeth, Anthrax, Slayer) as metal. I started teaching highschool at this time and had lots and lots of discussions about metal with these kids. I also had my best friend feeding me bands to listen to from all his bachelor adventures. I started making a list/poll of what these people thought was the best metal bands/songs of all time. and instead of scoffing at odd ball bands that people would say i decided I would listen to the bands. so started my metal quest. And sure enough I came to find many more bands that I love. and some that I think are truly garbage. So i went from the main 4 to now listening to slipknot, Manowar, Loudness, Children of Boddom, Iced Earth, Corrosion of Conformity, Avenged Seven Fold, Black Label Society, Blind Guardian, Dio, Dream Theater, Pantera and Mastadon.

I really dont like the metal with the growling/monster voice bands unless the music is just that good. I listen more for great musicians and can overlook the singers sometimes. But sometimes it is just so awful that i cant stand to listen to it at all. All of this has made me much more open minded to music. even to country now days. there are some great guitarists that are country singers today. which 10 years ago, i made fun of country and wouldnt listen to it if forced too.
