13th TDS Hot Wheels Championship Recap Video

Skuxmobile Thursday, 2/4/2016

Figured you guys would be interested in how we race hotwheels in New Zealand. Our most recent tournament consisted of a no lane track, relay track, Mcdonalds track (see video) and jump track, with points given to top ten cars in each event (10, 9...2, 1).

The no lane is simple enough, we all entered 14 cars, winners progress to the next round till we had a top ten. Races with no finishers are judged based on distance travelled, and we don't do best of three mainly to simplify logistics of moving cars around and speed things up. The zigzag configuration enables come from behind victories and a smaller track footprint (can watch entire race more easily).

The relay track is featured more prominently in another video. We all had three attempts at the track each, and if a competitor wants more than one placing, they need to enter a completely different team (no casting double ups). The track was timed.

The Mcdonalds track  is made of numerous roller coaster happy meals and provides fantastic racing. The happy meals came out in new Zealand when we were kids (I'm guessing 2000-2003) but I have never seen them on the web. The trick to this track is choosing the fastest cars that are reliable and don't crash. The track can be built in numerous configurations; we could make it twice the height if we wanted a longer race, or make it four lane, but our lacking of a finishing gate makes 4 lane problematic. Some fast cars include 69 Camaro, Hammerhead, Chrysler AMC Javelin, Morris Mini, 07 Shelby Gt500

Finally, our jump track comes down from the ceiling in an aluminium tube (came from a shower I believe) and the jump is home made from wood. Cars jump between 3.5-3.9 metres, and jump lengths are recorded by having 3 people put their finger where they think the car landed, and taking the average. Having a piece of paper on the impact zone helps as we can identify where cars land from dents/rips in the paper. And before you ask, only 1 car has ever been fatally injured negotiating the jump track. Good jumpers are generally the ones that go fast on ordinary HW track.

Below is the video of our event. If anyone is interested wading through all our banter, I also added a longer cut of the video which has also has some more racing action.

LOL, that's awesome - some serious Rube Goldberg stuff right there. Maybe I just missed the date but if you guys do this again, post a date here and I bet you'll get some guys sending cars half way around the world to enter.

That's awesome, Guys! I love the over and under style track...I would have never thought of that!

Keep having fun withe the Hot Wheels and sharing the videos!

Creating these tracks was probably half the fun!  Cheers!

Man, I wish our McDonalds had those tracks!
