A Grand Diecast Database?

Bongo Wednesday, 3/9/2022

Say I wanted to find a 1950 DeSoto in 1:64 scale. The Hot Wheels fanwiki has nothing (unsurprisingly). The various Matchbox references have nothing. Google itself is a little helpful, but I have my doubts. Sometimes cars are renamed for licensing reasons, sometimes it seems like cars are amalgamated into a "close enough" run of a few models, etc. You all know this. So, is there an "all brands" grand diecast database out there I haven't stumbled on yet?

I had a thought (and I'm not known for original thinking), that it would be so helpful to plug in year/make/model and see what's "out there" and at what scale. But maybe this dream database is called something esoteric and I just haven't heard of it, yet.

For those wondering, it looks like maybe the closest I can get is a 1955 DeSoto from M2, which is very nice but ... isn't very close.

Thanks!

Check out HobbyDB.com it might help. It's just a big database where people plug in cars of all types. It's not just for diecast cars but it might help on your quest.

Until a few months ago, I only occasionally bought a car model because I liked it. But having fallen for the "gravity racing poison", I usually buy quite a few more lately.

But as I have fallen in the "gravity racing poison", I'm buying more cars lately. Now, I usually buy lots online (20/30 cars) because I look for or like some of the cars they have, and I use the rest for spare parts, wheels, etc., you know. I live and shop in Europe, and on those lots there are always some cars from small local brands. And I have a habit of documenting all cars before trying to restore or destroy them. And it's not easy, not even with the biggest brands.

And I haven't found that "perfect and very complete database of all brands" either, no. And I also wish it existed!

In the meantime, I often use the HobbyDB one and also look at some stores that keep out-of-production models on their bases. There is one that is especially useful to me. Since it's from a store, I think it's better that if you're interested, I send you the address via DM, right?

By the way, what i most wan't to find is a 1964 Seat 600D in 1:64!! lol

  • I was able to find things I didn't know existed on HobbyDB, so that was a big help! I have an idea for a diorama project, but it involves cars that aren't super popular for toy/model makers it turns out. May just try to get "close enough." I'll certainly be adding anything missing to the database should I run across anything. — Bongo
  • I've checked in the other's DB I told you for the DeSoto and nothing in 1/64. And, in the other scales, nothing from 1950. I'll check it if I remember when i will be shopping. In the really strange case that I found anything, I promise a 0% commission for the info! — Kastanets
