bedroom spiral set-up

HarvestmanMan Friday, 2/25/2011

Hi guys, I thought I’d come here for a question I have.
I want to do something in my bedroom that allows Hot Wheels track to go on a rectangular spiral around the room. I’d like it to be completely gravity-powered. However, since my parents will not allow me to suspend the track from the ceiling, I will have to try to attach it to the walls. Pieces of tin bent in square U shapes and nailed to the wall did not work; neither did nailing the sides of the track to the wall. I will also have to find a way to attach the curves (which form right angles) to the wall.
I’d like something that both supports the track and provides a barrier of sorts so that it cannot slide off its support. Once again, I’d like for this to be a spiral, so the starting stretch would be highest, the second stretch would be lower, and the third would be even lower, and so on.
Can anyone help me figure out a way to do this?

Can't help you at all with the design, but Hot Wheels is coming out with wall tracks this fall.

Maybe this will give you some ideas.

Awesome! I want some wall track...my wife is going to looooove that in our bedroom!\
May be some way to put two side by side for a drag track around the room.

As far as your in bedroom spiral, I would suggest building a 4 post contraption you can stick in the corner if you have room.
Support the track off the posts and not off the walls. So your parents will let you put holes in the walls but not 4 in the ceiling?

Brian conducted an interview with the guy from http://www.dcraction.com and he has a track set up similar to what you describe. He has 4 long straight aways that go around a room.
Here is the interview from the Red Line Derby site:

Maybe if you contact him he can let you now how he did his.

Actually, I have talked with him on YouTube about his setup. He says that he suspended the track from the ceiling by the method I described.

Cool topic! I like the way you think HarvestmanMan. I mentioned, way back in the early days of this forum, in reply to a 'Variation Jason' post that my dream was to someday have a room dedicated solely to Hot Wheels. The coolest aspect of this 'dream room' was that it would have a two lane Hot Wheel track that would have it's start gate about chest height on one side of the entry door and would gradually descend circling all the way around the room ending at the finish gate at or near the floor on the other side of the door. Imagine that kind of head-to-head racing action!
I love that new-product 'wall track' coming out. If Danielle truly loves me she will let me buy some so I can line the walls with it!!!

You would have to stagger the finish line or the opening gate or the inside track will always have the advantage. But yeah, that would be awesome.
