JUST spitballing... I see 9 teams = 9 cars... single eliminations, even with a race in for 8th, is 10 or 11 pairings...
I.M.O. maybe like cops n robbers...2 classes
[2] cars each on team,
1 car = yr. of birth [+or-] 1yr...and the other = a make or model of - the series coordinator's choice...
... and I will back this "extra work" up by a hosting a heet if convenient for the series...I.M.O. !

I like your idea, and am going to go with it. I'm going to take you up on the hosting, and the second set of cars I think will be right up your alley for the idea of adding another.

Okay guys, first post is updated. A second class was added. The second class will be for any favorite real world car. Please chack it out, opens it up for another interesting spread of cars, I hope everyone likes it and stays in the series.

Are the classes going to be kept separate, or combined as in the Cop/Robber series?

I like your second class...might have to be an Audi R8 for me. I just have to decide whether I really want to modify such a beauty and possibly have it suck, or enter a stock which will probably get annihilated.
