Building a Hill Climb

Good evening all,

after watching the vids on "these guys are serious" thread,

the more I had to try and build a hill climb

(also unhappy with the off road wash, needs adjusting severly)

first round of wood work, then pink foam, shaping, and texture to come

I am very happy with "how it behaves" so far, now to try and not screw that up.

6 1/2 ft long, 17" drop, and tiltable for speed control

That looks crazy! Keep at it!

Well that certainly is keeping you busy!

Good one!

Keep your caffeine levels at peak intensity and move forward. Super duper.

Great idea Doc, bending the wood like that is a hell of a skill.

  • actually pretty easy in houston in the summer, the outdoor steamer...lol — dr_dodge

Progress continues

I mention the dehumidifyer, but I can not recommend it enough.  a wet glue up that may take overnight, is usually dry in 2-3 hrs.  and "deep dried".  it also speeds styrene gluing dramaticly.
The air blowing out of it has no moisture, so it just sucks it right out of the project.

Testing cars and trying to get an idea how to film on it
Runs pretty good.  After it's waterprof'd, I plan on using some sand in it for effect, and hopefully to settle them down

  • Let me know what type of truck to build. I want to run this course! — Dutch_Clutch_Racing
  • second that! lol I got a Deppeneuse ready to roll! — Stoopid_Fish_Racing

So, progress is going well.  I have a start gate, now.
and testing various cars is going extremely well

brainstroming classes:

1. Stock (not drilled) Jeeps
2.  Rail buggies, (not drilled) less than 28 grams (most seem to fit there)
3.  Moddded/stock Drag trucks  single cab 4x4s ~ 50 grams
4. Stock Long trucks (extended cabs and 4 doors)  ???grams
5. Super mods. 60?? grams, fantasy castings or distorted/tooned bodies
(like some of the crazy monster trucks)

must have tires w/ tread.
all weight hidden, no tarps or covers over the beds of PU's unless it came that way

I may add dune buggies/bugs but the buggy castings are scarce,

but this is a brain storm, so feel free to suggest alternates
my goal is to run some races out of my stock cars, and start testing heavier cars
and next year run a weekly series of 2-3 of the classes, and do season (a set time probably 3 months) points
top 2 of every class return the next season, all others are rotated out

Points:
each segment of the hill is 1 pt, there are 8 total
drag truck, and super mods run a drag race, the furthest(fastest?) gets a point
(all other classes will drag race only the finals)
a point for staying on your wheels,
a point for not "breaking the driveline" aka rolling backwards to the previous segment

so stock classes have a max pts of 10, mods 11
and 8 points in checkpoints up the hill

trying to sort this out so next year I can accept mail ins
I am really diggin' this track, so quick and ruthlessly unpredictable

  • You call it, I'll make it and send it! Looks like a fun time! — Stoopid_Fish_Racing
  • Brainstorming ....hmmm. How about some flywheel cars. I haven’t seen one in a while but I know they exist. — alva1370
  • A lot of people put weights in the pickup beds, and often cover them with tarps or bed covers. That's going to be a handicap to adding weights, especially on some vehicles that don't have a lot of room to begin with. Track is coming along nicely. — SpyDude

This sounds like a great time!   I like vehicle ideas #1, #3 & #4 but.....going to want to participate in ANY class I suspect.

  • I am just kicking the tires right now, but eventually we gonna fire this thing up...lol — dr_dodge

ok, you guys wanting to build to race the hill climb

I will define the first pair of classes

Rail Buggy; stock or mod, 30

grams no more

Super Buggies:
any slingshot dragster like casting (coffin/weird allowed cars = yes)
long, skinny
32 grams, no more

(obviously off road wheels)

I stress make it under, because there iwill be NO leway for over weight.
all classes will have a hard break for weight.  I'll compare close calls with a set of trim masses on vid
not under the class hard break, you will move up a class, and race cars 9.95 heavier than you

it seems like many, if not all stock castings fit this weight range
and the are open mod cars because,
most yard sale off road stuff need straight axles...lol

and the dragsters are the logical next class up
I used to watch the sand drag fuellers when they came to town,

the backdrop is glued nicely,
a famous artish has so wonderfully agreed to paint,
yet another backdrop

if you PM me, and want to send test cars let me know
I'll film them.  first of the year is my target for serious racing.

but, every event winner must race the top GOAT of the hill (or 3)
test cars that kick butt will be the first goats

I am so stoked with this track!

dr

  • I am excited to build testers! Is Rail Buggy a casting name? — Fat_Dad

Well......I have a couple of each of those 2 classes I can work with......guess I'm headed back downstairs to get to work.

  • I cannot find a car that fits the classification that is under the weight limit listed. Rigor Motor is 37g for example (it is metal/metal version). — Dutch_Clutch_Racing
