Crazy for Convertibles series!

MattCat Wednesday, 2/11/2015

Hey guys! Since relay mania was a flop, I wanted to contribute to the community to make a race people might enter in! We'll have 3 classes, cars will race cars of their own class until we've got the top 2 from each class, then they'll race together and make the finals. This is how it will be for all the races in the series. The 3 classes are: CONCEPT: Concept cars that are convertibles. MODERN: Convertibles that are driven in this day and age. OLDER: Convertibles from 1955 to 1985. Hope you can have fun with this one! We need dates! When are you available to race?

Rules & Restrictions

  • Weight minimum/maximum: 40G to 50G
  • Cars per entrant/household: 2 for each category is the maximum.
  • In concept, FTE's only. In modern, Any wheel goes but FTE's are preferable. In older, any wheel goes but it'd be cool to see at least one MBX Laser wheels car or a redline.
  • Stock cars allowed in the older convertible.
  • Must be drilled rivets in modern convertible and concept convertible.
  • Dry lubes only
  • Cars must actually look like they started off life as a convertible, even if they did or didn't.

Prizes

TBD. If anyone can mock up a prize car that'd be great.

How to enter

Post a reply along with how many cars you're going to enter. Post a picture of your cars as well!

Where to send your cars

Well, we don't have a host yet, but when we do....

Don't forget to print an ID card with your entry

Entry deadline

TBD.

Scoring and Winning

Anyone got any suggestions on this? I want you guys to have an input! We'll go with the idea of 3 classes, cars will race cars of their own class until we've got the top 2 from each class, then they'll race together and make the finals, but I need help with how the scoring will work.

Tracks & Dates

TBD. We need dates, guys! Tell us when you're available so I can schedule the race for it!

I might be interested if this one gets some steam!  Convertibles make cool competition!

How about a '54 Corvette?  Would that work for older cars?

As for racing and scoring--my suggestion would be to have double-elimination tournaments, and maybe have a random draw or race-off to determine the top-two of the three third-placers (so that you could have a more-even eight in the finals than six).  As for points--you could award them for the four races individually, just the three individually, or combine them all (or just the three before the finals).  At least, those seem like the most doable options (all of which sound interesting to me--though I might vote for separating them, especially if you are going to allow people to enter one class and not the others--IF that's your intent).

I hope this tournament get some support!  Thanks for a great idea, MC!

Haha one year off! Sure, a 54 Corvette is fine!

Your scoring options look good, they might be used! I'm allowing everyone to enter cars in all the categories, so they can build lots of variable cars!

I hope it gets noticed too!

FOTF, just a thought, if this happens, are you able to host? You seem interested enough!

Thanks, MC!  I've got a good one to send in for that, though I'm not sure if I'll get around to drilling anything decent for the others (I might need to try, though, if I put one or two in one class).

Sure, I can host!  We can bring them to the LJLRC and do it on one of their tracks (maybe I could even see if the RIHWC will let us do a round on their track).

Nice! I hope this tournament attracts other racers, because I feel this is going to be great! Racin' at the LJLRC and maybe the RIHWC! Shame I can't participate. Damn shipping costs! :(

  • You're from Australia, right? How much is it to ship from there to the US? — FOTF
  • Sea mail is $20, but it takes ages. Air is $30 to $440 at the cheapest — MattCat
  • $40 not $440 — MattCat
  • Yeah, I thought $440 was a little exorbitant...ha-ha-ha. Still stinks, though. — FOTF

So, if we can MAKE a convertible out of something... Count me in. I found some Purple Passions yesterday!!

Yep! You can! A purple passion convertible... Nice.

  • I saw someone else on a different thread had altered a Purple Passion similar to one I had done. It makes a nice ride!! — CrzyTrkrDude
  • ( too bad I lost it in a move a while back) — CrzyTrkrDude
