DCX Super Convention

FOTF Friday, 12/20/2013

Are any of you going to the DCX Die Cast Super Convention in Las Vegas this coming February? I'm not, but the LJLRC was asked to be put in charge of running the races, so I'm going to try and get a couple cars there for the racing. I didn't know if they'd be seeing any rival RLD teams.

One of these days I will, maybe in a year when I get my license

By then you'll have to face me as reigning champ!

I went to the Nashville convention a couple years ago but never out to Vegas, kinda far for me, hard to justify the cost/time unless I was helping organize stuff. I would hope Vegas would be 2x better than Nashville...it was fun but I think I had a different set of expectations going in, so I was a little disappointed.

Please post details if you know it's a mailin race, I'd be game to send something in too.

Yeah if it's a mail-in I'd like to see if I could participate. Also, FOTF, even if you were the champ it would fun anyway. I'd like to go because I want to see the racing in person, plus I also collect Hot Wheels so I could do some trading / buying there

I don't have that many clear details, but it's in late February. I'm not sure whether or not you can mail cars in, I'd have to find out (if it isn't, then perhaps you could mail them to me, and I could send them along with mine and the LJLRC representatives). It's supposedly like the Super Bowl of die cast racing. I'll also find out about race classes. I think it happens every year, but I'm not entirely sure.

Yeah, KO, they've probably got all the ringers available for purchase at that thing!

The Vegas show is the big show for diecast collecting. They race every year and from what I've heard, it's quite the spectacle. One of the first RLD members, Variation Jason, often ran the races on his monster 8-lane, 50-foot track out there. He told me they do late-night cash races too...money, booze and Hot Wheels - a deadly combination ;P

If you're on other diecast forums or know someone going out there, it's a lot of fun to meetup face-to-face and talk with people you know only as a screen name.

The Nashville convention I went to I don't think is anything like Vegas, at least I would hope not. I was expecting an exhibit hall filled with tables and cars, like any other collector convention but at Nashville it was room-to-room within the hotel. Kind of awkward but I was told that's just how it's done. Hopefully you don't mind walking into people's hotel room to browse hundreds of diecast cars thrown about their room and on their bed.

But once you get over that bit, there are usually some great deals to be had from people selling and trading. Going to the convention as a racer also limited some things because I was less interested in straight-up collecting (ie, paying a lot for rare cars) and just looking for cheaper mainline cars to race. I mean, it is an entire convention for collectors and racing is just a small part of that - we're a niche inside a niche.

But to all that are going, please take some photos and share them come Spring. And if you want any Redline Derby swag to take out there (or wear), PM me and we'll make it happen.

The Nashville thing sounds kind of like Summersmash put on by the RIHWC. I had a great time--I'd never been to a Die Cast Convention before. I got a lot of NASCARs off of one guy, at least two of which you guys of seen (and one of them has won two trophies).

I'm still waiting for more info on DCX 2014, but I'll let you know when I get some.
