Hey gang, some of you wanted to see a little more detail about my starting gate and timing system. Here is a video explaining how it works. Read about the whole track build

Very nice, thanks for making the video. Oddly simple and elegant with those cables. I just like that it's much more involved than simply pressing a button releasing a solenoid or something.

So I take it that when you press the button for the staging pin, you have to keep that held down while you're waiting for the tree and hit the gas? So at "Go" you're holding down one with your thumb and using your foot with the other.

And the pins that are visible above the track, is that just the cable itself sticking up? Or do you have another pin/part that is attached to the cable. I figure the cable is rigid enough that you could just bend it straight and it'd be fine but just wondering...

My old start line had a little manual release on the side so I rigged up a string to a drum pedal so I could release while still using both hads to shoot video. Worked really well, gotta say.

  • Thank you. Yes, you are correct on both sentiments. Once the driver stages their car with the thumb button, they must continue to hold it down until the car is released with the foot pedal. And yes those are just the stainless cables that act as the pins holding the cars back. I put a drop of solder on the ends to keep them from fraying. — Sals_Speed_Shop
  • That is a seriously slick idea. I likes it! — SpyDude
