Another thing about this race: Try to get the track as level as you can. For example, my house floor isn't perfectly level between the living and dining rooms, which is where the track gets set up. If you sit a car on the straightaway, it sometimes "magically" starts to roll.

Sounds like your clutch/transmission might be slipping!
(Our house sits on a concrete slab and it has some slopes in it as well. It would only be 'magical' though if it starting rolling up hill!)
