Need some help here...

Tracanas_DCRPT Tuesday, 4/21/2020

So, I've started modding these 2 guys, first time I'm doing it for speed. Opened up both, charged them with putty clay and some nuts to add weight, and they became slower! What am I doing wrong here? The axels are free, nothing touching them, and I use a stock chevelle that I know it's pretty fast but they cant pass him...

Discussion

Mods with the increased weight need the axels set and aligned...plus Wheel Farm...find a set of wheels that spin good...sand the wheels etc.

...check out Speed Shop on my YouTube channel aka League of Speed

Welcome to race modding! LOL You'll hit this dilemma again and again, that's just the way it goes...and that should be the fun part (but I also know how frustrating it can be).

Weight alone isn't enough. It'll help but if your axles are crooked or your wheels are wobbly, then all the weight won't make a difference. Of course, it's also where you weight is and how it's distributed within your car.

Check out the Archive here and browse through the collection list...you'll see several that could help. There's one about Wheels and another for Weight, plus lots of How-to stuff so there's plenty to chew on and get some ideas.

One good thing to keep in mind is to make your cars testable...make it so you can add things to your car, try it, adjust, test, adjust...and so on. So rather than glue it up after adding some weight, use clay or screws or something that lets you button up your car without it being permanent. I've used the blue poster tack with success but also used screws to keep cars tight but able to undo them later.

They were both new out of the blister... I guess coned wheels aren't that good, but what was strange was they got slower than stock.

  • Happens all the time. Being brand new can make a difference too. After a little break-in time on the track, cars will get better. — redlinederby

You opened them and added weight, but what else did you do to them?

The wheels on the camo car (sorry can't remember the name) are very inconsistent speed wise.

  • Thr Muscle bound was fast when I took it out of the blister. One of my fastest stock cars. Just added putty clay wherever I could and some nuts. Haven't started sanding axels and wheels, I have several wheels that I've farmed on my Custom years, and I dont have any dry lube. Im thinking of using wd40... Will it work? — Tracanas_DCRPT
  • Wd40 can damage plastic and like I said even on "fast" cars those wheels are very inconsistent — NDeavers80
  • Been using wd40 in several RC plastic parts, and it never ruined any plastics — Tracanas_DCRPT
  • I've seen it ruin wheels on hot wheels but not always — NDeavers80

Btw, this is the chevelle that's been unbeatable on my track, it's stock. I have some wheels like those that I've farmed, maybe I'll try to put them on the muscle bound

Time patience and practice will make a big difference in your modding.  Stick with it, analyze every little thing you can think of that would cause it to slow down and try to dial it in.  That and realize that sometimes...often actually...there will be duds.  Dont give up tho, have fun with it and when you finally put one together and it smokes the rest, itll be all the more worth it!

  • I have a dud already... The dastun. Dunno how to put it going faster, but it never was a fast one. But the muscle bound... I would love him to be a killer on the road... — Tracanas_DCRPT

When customizing a new car I normally try and get 2 of the same cars race them against each other and then I and try to customize one of them to smoke the other one and that helps me to see if I am going in the right direction with making it faster. Everyone is right, trial and error sucks, but just continue to move forward in time you will get it.

What everyone is talking about is the...Riddle of Speed...it's real and you can dominate one month  and lay a turd the next...you just stay with it...but first and foremost...gotta Wheel Farm.

I'm still new and still suck at it. I do have high Hope's to maybe win a round this April race or at least stay close.

I did change my whole routine with axles, now I sand, clean, dry lubes, buff, graphite powder, buff, clean then buff again. We will see if it helps at all.
