New house, bedroom track
I want to begin planning a semi-permanent track installation for my son's room in our new home. He's almost 4, and this would be a perfect birthday present.
I think what I need now are
- suggestions on materials,
- tips on mounting to the wall,
- techniques for placing cars on the start line (assuming some form of elevator will be needed),
- ideas for a toddler to clear a track if he's playing by himself,
- easy, low profile 180 turns to create switchbacks
etc. I'm looking for inspriation and tips. Thanks!

I myself dont have a track but there are lots of useful forums on this site that could have what you're looking for
I'd suggest browsing through the Track Directory to get some ideas. Most of the listings are full-sized tracks but you could certainly whittle some of the ideas down to fit a bedroom.
My perma track was just attached to the wall with normal shelf brackets, nothing fancy. I was just looking for a drag strip though, not really the kid-quality action you're probably after...but...just sayin' don't discount simple brackets and some boards. Don't overthink it :)
But you're in the right spot...check out the Track forums, they go back many years and have lots of great ideas to chew on.

@redlinederby - Thanks for the tips! I went and bought some coroplast and some blutrack online. I almost fell for the corocutter, but then remembered these hook razors for box cutters, and it'll do nicely. I might 3dprint a guide for it though. or see if I can't form one out of steel or aluminum or something.
The brackets and boards is a great idea. I've been lugging around some ikea brackets for at least 3 years because we haven't owned a home where we can put holes in the wall.
I'm so pumped for this. I might even build one in my office!
Pic included is my dog, the hook razor, and a 13 cells wide track. The surface is pretty matte, so I'm hopeful I'll avoid a decent amount of sliding and spinning.

I've planned out the entire track in CAD, but the measurements are all wrong.
my biggest question is I suppose one of "grade" (is that the right word?). I don't know how steep to make the tracks, or what kind of turns to use. As I said before, I'll be using coroplast for the tracks. Aside from funneling down to one lane, I also don't know what features I can add to make it more fun.
here's the path: start on the left wall, drive down across a bridge (the alcove there is the closet, and there's no door on it) to turn 1.
Then it's down to a small flat section, which will be shelves, under which will go some lights that my son can use to read.
after the shelves, it's down to turn 2 and 3, for a turnaround to head back across the room. Turn 4 is a left turn back across another bridge to finish under the start line.
alternate ending would be to go into the closet, drive around the rear perimeter of it, then come back out and finish in the same spot.
I have a table of variables I've made in CAD, and I can tweak them for a better run. I just don't know what slope is sufficient for enough but not too much speed, nor where I'm gonna get the turns. Any tips anyone might have would absolutely be welcome!
ps- I realize some of my slopes are way wrong/too steep. I need to rebuild the whole file anyway, so if anyone wants to suggest how I should set up my variables, I'll welcome that for sure!



Oh ps: I'm going for two lanes, slightly narrower to try and minimize the sliding. Might have the first leg have two separate lanes to try to build up speed

An update and a problem I've run into.
Update:I didn't like the look of any of shelf mounts on the 3d printing Site, so I made my own. Features 3 screws into the wall, and two into the board from underneath.

Secondly, I have a problem with my turnaround. Using the MagTurn 180 Curve from 3DBotMaker, I can't get quite the turn I want to make... ia this pic, the yellow line is the wall. This rendering is from Bambu Studio. no matter which way I have it turn, it uses a lot of parts and ends up running ino the wall. Any thoughts from anyone? Has anyone here ever done a turn like this? If so, how'd you accomplish it?

- yea, it seems 90 is a minimum to "sling a corner" . my jamestown bypass needed a 45 and I spent a year to just get cars to run thru it and not fly off or spin out — dr_dodge

remember the shelf wood is at an angle. if you angle the bracket good chance you can't get all the screws in the studs (drywall anchors will probably not be strong enough.
also if you need to adjust the slop/grade of the track when testing you will have to unscrew it from the wall.
maybe consider the "strip mount shelving arms?
will give you a fairly fine adjustment ability
and the strips will be solidly mounted to the studs
(incase someone climbs on it...lol)

then make 3d holder from the shelf support to the board with a pivot for your angle.

I made book shelves with 2x4s and l brackets and they held forever.
2x4 cut to 2 feet,the other as long as you want, lets say 7ft. make an upside down L mount L brackets on the inside of the L at whatever heights you need on the insides of the L's. Place shelves going across the L's and screw them in.
Very cheap and sturdy. Watch The D&D guys for buildings and carvings and terrain. Good luck, welcome and enjoy it with your son.

This has taken way longer than I intended. But it's because I'm basically redesigning the MagTrack set to be more expansive and work for my needs more updates later
