Points Racing...
Holy cow... this is a lot to think about, but all good information.
Last summer I did a 3 race series on my 25' track here in Austin.
I think I did 5 points to winner, 2 to runner up and 1 to each person you entered.
After one guy one two races (with different cars) it was over, no one could catch him.
I think having the points closer together works 3, 2, 1....
Jason's system in the hardcore series works well but it's alot of racing

Yes, I think NHRA has 18 events, or so. They can get the bell curve going with that many events. They also do:
Performance bonus points are awarded for each qualifying session as follows:
Low e.t. of each session....... 3
Second-quickest................... 2
Third-quickest....................... 1

NHRA Points Awarded At Each National Event:
Winner = 100
Runner-up = 80
Third-round loser = 60
Second-round loser = 40
First-round loser = 20
* Additional points are awarded as follows:
10 points to all contestants- 1 qualifying run required.
20 points for establishing an official ET record (national records only, not track records).
Qualifying positions earn points as follows:
1st = 8
2nd = 7
3rd = 6
4th = 5
5th & 6th = 4
7th & 8th = 3
9th thru 12th = 2
13th thru 16th = 1
