Review: Tex Racks, a new way to store your collection

A New Way To Store Your Die Cast Car Collection

We've all been there...

You buy 10 more cars at the store, bring them home, and then put them somewhere that you hope to find again.  Whether that be still in the bag you brought them home in, into a bucket, or box you label Die Cast Cars and put it on a shelf.  How about those totes full of cars, the shelves showing off the ones you like the most, or even just placing all your cars into Hot Wheel cases.  We all have our ways of storing our collections.

But what if you need to find that ‘one’ car out of all of the storage locations you have them in?  Can you find it easily?  If you are like me, you may have a spreadsheet or something to know what cars you actually have, but where is it?  I recently wanted to find a car in my collection but with the quantity of boxes/totes/bags/chests in the man cave; I couldn’t find it.

That led me down the path of the Internet to try and find a solution.  Then I found Tex Racks.  They created a storage system that can hold collections and is easily expandable.  You can get storage systems that hold every method of storage you prefer.  From loose cars to carded main lines, these rack systems start at about 300 cars to racks that can hold 1,000 die cast cars.

I saw their demonstration video, and then watched the video of the creator of the system, and I thought this is what I need.  I have over 500 cars (main lines mostly) but they are all in boxes/totes/chests, and even the bag from the store.  A storage system that can hold 500 main lines would be a good start.  I also have little cases to hold 100 opened cars that I can race with, but I wanted something to hold the collection of cars so that I can easily store them neatly; yet find a car when I needed one for a mail-in race event.  I chose the rack that holds main line cars with the ability to hold up to 540 cars. 

On-line ordering is easy and it arrived within a week.  Unpacking shows you a nice layout of where to drill into the walls to mount it.  All screws are provided with sturdy brackets.  The outer cloth casing goes over the brackets, then just slide the drawers into each slot.  You can get this all done within an hour.

But is it strong enough?

One of my concerns when purchasing something like this, was with the cloth-based shell that is to hold the drawers.  Was it really strong enough to hold 500 cars?  When I watched the video and saw how it worked, I told myself that it is not like I get into these drawers all the time, so it is probably a decent idea to use cloth.  Sure enough.  The cloth is thick, has great stitching, so I am comfortable that it will last.  Overall, I am happy with the build quality to serve as it should.

Let’s talk about the drawers.  There are 20 drawers supplied with the kit I purchased.  The claim is it can hold 540 cars.  That is 20 drawers, times 27 cars per drawer.  If we break that down, each drawer has 3 rows to hold cars.  You can fit 6 cars per row very nicely.  With 3 rows, that is 18 cars per drawer.  However, the idea to gain more space for storage is that you lay the first 6 cars down, then you can turn 3 new cards upside down to fill the gap space.  This would result in allowing you to put 9 cars per row.  Doing this would then give you 27 cars per drawer.  Doing it the way it is suggested will give the total 540 cars for the smaller unit to hold main line cards.

For me, my cars have been transferred to boxes and totes and such that many of them do not have ‘pristine’ edges.  That is not a concern for my collection as they are of generic main line variety with nothing ‘valuable’ that I am trying to protect.  I bring this up because I do notice that when I use 27 cars per drawer, sometimes bringing the drawer out, it can get caught up on the cloth shelf above it.  That is not a reflection on the shelving unit, but more that my main line carded cars have bends in them which will get caught when pointing upwards towards the shelf above.

A good solution 

How would you use this system if you decide to purchase this rack system?  If you have pristine card edges that you want to retain, then maybe only putting in 6 cars flat is your best option.  This still give you storage of 6 cars per row, 18 cars per drawer, and 20 drawers to hold a total of 360 main line carded cars.  It will store them nice and clean and you will not have an issue.  Again though, how often do you get into the drawers and if you know about this and are careful about it, it may not be an issue.  That is an individual choice on your personal collection.  Another thing I liked is the ability to hold my 5-pack type boxed sets.  They sit in their just fine as if it was 5 regular main lines being put in the drawer.

As mentioned above, the company is Tex Racks (Tex Racks YouTube Channel).  On their website you will notice this: "The optimal storage solution for your Hot Wheels and Matchbox models."  I think they have it.  It really does store many die cast cars per unit, and with the different options they have available, you can mix and match what works best for your collection.
