I have the "Hot Ones" 442 and the El Rey Special. I have not given them a proper race/test but I thought they were OK when I ran them down the track a couple times. I guess I know what's on the schedule next. This particular Shadow Jet is a big disappointment though.

In all fairness, the Hot Ones shadow jet isn't that bad, but it just doesn't live up to the high expectations that Shadow Jet's have. Especially the Technobits one! None of the hot ones series cars are bullets from what i've seen, but they seem to hold their own pretty well! I have the 1957 Chevy and Solaire as well and they're pretty decent cars. Again, not top tier, but decent.

I agree with Jobe in that they're good modding cars. Someone needs to throw some FTE's on that Shadow Jet!

What would be cool would be a mail-in race of all new Hot Ones with FTE swaps.
Swapping the wheels of a plastic bottom car is pretty simple, but haven't tried it on a metal bottom yet. Any tips?

wow...
it is easier if you do not want to save the stock wheels ? when sacrificing, heat the PRONGS with a candle, then with needlenose plyers tear the old axle out left to right, this will open the PRONGS, re heat and insert a small screw driver and rock front to back till the new axle drops in... now drill a 1/16" hole on either side of the PRONGS, [if a prong breaks, drill in the center] , countersink the under side... tape it off... mix up some j.b.weld, fill the drilled hole first, then about a bb size dab over the prongs, carefully drop in the axle, cover with j.b., cut a thin slot just over halfway across the [4]3/8"x 3/8" cardstock wheel SHIMS...slide them between the base and wheel hubs, when the j.b. first starts to gell flip it upside down... leave a test dab of j.b. on the card, when hard, but you can leave a mark with your thumbnail, flip right side up and line-up the axles, push a safety pin into the j.b. on the opposite side of the axle that you want to move the wheel, the compression of the j.b. will move the axle where you want it, when right set on a bottle cap...to cure
hope it helps more than hurts... no time to proof... out the door, hope it makes sense...

Great how-to Smitty. Especially the parts about drilling a hole in the base to give the JB Weld a place to grab onto and the spacers to center help center the axles (I never thought of that!). Brian should use parts of it to update this article http://www.redlinederby.com/blog/2009/09/fix-your-axles-for-better-speed/ on the Redline Derby Blog.

There are MANY articles I need to update, it's daunting, especially since photos are the biggest value add for posts. All in good time.

Thanks Smitty! I copied and pasted those instructions into a folder I keep on "How To's". This 'How To' folder has info from Brian on track building, some Variation Jason's tips I used to make my super-fast 442, and Jobe's detailed instructions on how he paints his customs -a wealth of Hot Wheel custom/modding information!
