It seems the automatic options are largely out of reach due to cost. But Chat GPT made this suggestion, among others, when asking it for DIY solutions:

3. Smartphone Video Timer
Record races with a high-frame-rate phone camera (120-240fps).
Use video editing software (like Adobe Premiere or a free app like ChronoViz) to analyze timestamps.
Pros: No extra hardware, works well
Cons: Requires video review, not as instant

Yes, and that does work and some hosts DO use that as a back up timer (GTR for example).

One of the potential issues is when you are using a multi camera setup. You need to have a fairly good sync on the videos, which wth editing software can be done with some practice.
