What does drilled rivets mean?

aircooled Tuesday, 10/27/2015

Hi, I'm new to this site and I have a couple of questions.  First, what does it mean when looking at what a race calls for and it says drilled rivets.  What does drilled rivets mean?  Second, looking at some of the post some guys use some type of ribbed material to set there cars on.  What is that material and who carries it.  Thanks in advance for the help.

Welcome to Redline Derby, glad you found us.

Drilled rivets means that the car you enter in the tournament has been taken apart. In order to take apart a Hot Wheels or Matchbox car, you have to use a drill to remove the rivets that hold the car together. If they're drilled it means you've modded the car. In other words, the car should be modded rather than sending in a car you just bought at the store.

The tool you see in some photos is an alignment jig made by one of our members, 72_Chevy_C10 (Chris). He made that himself for his mods. I've been trying to convince him to sell them...maybe another inquiry will help motivate him, hehe.

Again, welcome to the site and the hobby. I think you'll find a lot of great information on the site about modding cars and getting them ready to race. There is no shortage of tournaments to enter either...both mod tournaments and stock tournaments. There's something for everyone.

Just make a post or send me PM if you have any questions about Redline Derby or have any issues.

Hi Aircooled!

Drilled rivets refers to the rivets that hold the body on...a drilled rivet (or modded) car has, at least, had the body removed. If you are changing wheels and adding weight, you have to do this anyway. It is just a way to distinguish between a stock car and a modded one.

The wavy material is a jig that I make. But really, anything that has parellel ridges in it will hold your axles straight whIke your JB Weld is setting up.
