Why weight limits

Just_Will Monday, 11/9/2015

Hi everyone,

I'm long time listener, first time caller. I'm just curious as to why there certain weight limits to the races.

I understand about weight classes and that eventually a car can be too heavy to race effectively or even stay on the track, but I was just wondering why you guys limit at specific weights. Like 100g for example.

Also, has anyone ever figured out if there is a "prime" weight that is the most effective?

Thanks,

Will

Hey Will,

Welcome!

The weight limits are an easy way to make the races as close as possible. In a gravity race, weight is speed. There are exceptions, of course, but if you race a 50 gram car against a 75 gram car, the 75 gram car will have a definite advantage.

Personally, I like 57 grams...which originally came from 2 ounce weight limits. I fast 57 gram car is going to be pretty darned fast, and it isn't too bad getting a stock car up to that weight.

Thanks for asking...I hope that you'll be racing with us in the future!

Welcome back, Will! Hope you can join in on some future races.

Goes without saying that the optimal weight will depend on track factors, like angle and drop length. Hmmm...now you have me thinking if there's a formula to apply given those known variables to reach the optimal weight. Just because the limit is 75g does't mean 75g is the best weight if maybe the drop is short or angle not as steep...hmmm...science!

I think weight limits for races are good just to have an (arbitrary) challenge factor. Cars come off the pegs around 35g on average so anything less or greater than that requires extra work to mod, etc. Sometimes I find certain weight limits a deterrent to enter while some encourage me.
