So we just wrapped racing on the "Weber Canyon Course", the three-turn open track slalom and the track delivered!  It turned out to be a "two move" track where the deck could be shuffled, and then shuffled again before the finish.  There were amazing come from behind rallies, slick passes, occasional blocks and more dream crushing DNFs.   It was a great equalizer with everyone a possible winner in every run.  The nine cars to advance to the second round came from 8 different teams.  At least half a dozen times our jaws were dropped by what we saw.  After seeing this you will swear that someone, a very small someone, is inside one of the cars.

Well damn, my appropriated truck did pretty good...I'll take 4th place, especially given that crash at the end when it flew off the hill. That was awesome.

Again, great video that makes all the difference.

Alright, the first episode of the second open track is ready! The videos are so long in slow motion that I'm going to have to break it down into 4 segments. Here is the first half of the first round, 5 heats. Same point system used as the last open track race. There is a grudge match for the three highest scoring non-winners from the first round.

  • Looks like the Pimpmobile is out, so I'm interested to see who will conquer this Canyon — JDC442
  • Congrats to Everlings, TE, 2-7, RDR, and McJ -moving on! — JDC442

After the third round--still FOTF doesn't have a point!  I have to admit, though, I thought it was funny to see my V16 flip off at the end like that.  Let's face it, Traction Event--BluTrack is the legendary F40's Achille's Heel.  I'm really surprised it lost to that 'Cuda, though--from experience with my own fast JL 'Cuda of that same body style, those things seem like they can wobble like crazy; I figured that would kill that car's hopes on the BluTrack.

As for this latest video--and the last one--you're still doing great, McJiggles!  Considering the Camper thing, RLD's truck, the Mini, and how the first two performed--combined with the track and the spectacular falls--the Blur theme music seemed highly appropriate.  Would you consider this to be Mount Haruna or a Hollywood track?

Thanks for the great videos, and I look forward to seeing some more!

  • Not to mention the Rat cars (namely, the Gov'ner which looks like a Funny Car and the three-wheeled Sugar Cadi) which are racing. — FOTF
  • This has to be the Mount Haruma because its the only course that isnt a circuit! I love Blur, played tooo much of it — Mcjiggles9
  • Yeah, that's true. I was just thinking Hollywood because of the cars falling over the cliff. Sometimes I do as well. — FOTF
  • --play too much, not fall of cliffs. — FOTF

So far...so good... But we'll see how things play out.  The motor home got a win!

Yup the blue track seemed to act like a speed vacuum for the F40? Weird.

Cooper, the black gov is looking a bit rough.... The close up a are showing the wear and tear of this event...on all cars... Cool.

Unfortunately I'm headed out of town this morning and will not see any further results till Sunday. Out of radio contact for a few days.... This will nag at me all weekend....  Love it!

As for the pimpmobile, you still have a dog in this fight JDC. And there is still another race after this one... RLD rocks! Thanks for the great entertainment so far!

  • Yes, still plenty of racing to be had! At this rate the World Race could turn out to be a three week event. Mrs. Shaw must be loving it! — JDC442
  • Sadly we are approaching the finale. We'll run the funnel this weekend. — cliffordshaw

I didn't want to say anything about video #1 until all had a chance to see it, but I really loved the action in slo mo.  In real time this is a FAST race and slo mo really shows all the action going on.  My favorite so far is camper race number 3.  You can see from the first two runs that the camper does not have enough speed by turn three to hold the banking, and because of its height, tumbles on its side down the turn.  But in that run, it pulls a perfect pass on the third straightaway and enters the turn on the outside of the Dodge concept convertible, then leans on it all through the turn to stay on the track.  As they exit the turn side by side it's a perfect setup for a dramatic drag down the final straight to the finish.  But the camper wants none of this drama and after using the Convertible as a crutch through turn 3, dispenses it with a shove - off the track!  Could not have scripted a wilder finish.

I also loved the cars tumbling into oblivion from the third straight.  Despite the damage you saw to the black Gov'nor in post race photos (still to come on video), no other cars were harmed in the making of this film.  There is a lot of padding under the track and nobody hits concrete.  I still don't know why the Gov'nor cracked up - will have to wait for the slo mo.

What are your favorite moves so far?

  • Just watched the first race in the first segment again. The camper muscling CC's Dodge Concept over the edge in the last turn is epic. — JDC442

This was by far my favorite battle in round one.

Race 1: Like each of these races, the 2Seven Charger took the lead heading into the first curve, but got squirrely coming out, allowing an opening for the FOTF Caddy which slipped past the Charger and surviving the next two curves takes the initial victory.

Race 2: The Charger spins the Caddy 180 degrees after the first turn, but FOTF throws it in reverse, and looking over his shoulder, keeps going for the win and the nail in the Charger's coffin, but appears to hit something in the final straight and goes sideways and stalls (no points earned here which sets up an interesting final race)

Race 3: 2Seven needs to win this last race and make sure FOTF's Caddy doesn't finish if the Charger is to move on.  After the first turn, the incident occurs - it appears 2Seven paid off Redlinederby's Pharodox to take out the Caddy.  Looks like a successful hit as the Caddy is pinned behind the Pharodox in the second straight as 2Seven's Charger races to victory and a solo finish which would make him the points leader in these three races.  HOWEVER, somehow someway the Caddy breaks loose of the RDR Pharodox hold to finish the race and earn enough points to sneak past 2Seven and move on to Round 2.  Pure Awesomeness!

  • I agree this was a great heat. FOTF caddy running free and clear to ice it in race 2...but it is light and hugging the outside wall in the — cliffordshaw
  • Final straight, it hits a tiny seam in the track wall - which no one else ever snagged on - and hangs a goose egg for the DNF. — cliffordshaw
  • I felt terrible. But then to steal it back by finishing second in race 3 was poetic. — cliffordshaw
  • I could watch these over and over. More coming today — cliffordshaw
  • I also have to say the soundtrack to these races is spot on Mcjiggles. Especially love the tracks set to this last series. — JDC442
  • That FOTF dying on the final straight a heartbreaker, JDC's winner Cadillac going out in the first round for essentially being too fast... — MoHasAFastCar
  • ...for the turns was also great since I always root for the underdogs...and as such.... — MoHasAFastCar
  • Everlings camper van waddling through the course looking like it would fall at any second was thrilling to watch and see win — MoHasAFastCar
  • JDC, I think I have to agree with you--considering the great show and considering that that's the first time either of my cars did something — FOTF
  • Great synopsis, JDC! Of course, the races so far with the camper have been pretty good, too. That was funny to see that thing win. — FOTF
  • Looking back on this, I truly feel the Charger is the better of my two cars. The Canyon said "NO...no its not!" — 2seven

One thing about open track turns I've noticed is that, interference from other cars aside, having the car tuned to the track, or track tuned to the car, is essential for the best negotiating of the turn.  If you approach at the right speed for your weight you can sail through the center of the track, not rubbing either side...too fast and you hit the outer wall at an odd angle (rarely does anyone ride it, I think you'd have to be going monster fast for that) or donut out...too slow and you ride along the inside rail or way too slow and you fall over.
